I was traveling to Stradbroke Island for a wedding and when shooting destination weddings I always like to allow time to get out with my camera and take photos just for me (and the Print Shop). The afternoon light was just glorious, kilometres of unspoiled white sandy beaches and those ocean views – S T U N N I N G.
Pulling out the camera when I am traveling on my own is the perfect way for me to unwind, get my bearings and get inspired for the wedding day. To get out of the city and just absorb nature and breathe that fresh air is so good for rejuvenating the soul and creative juices.

Where is North Stradbroke Island
If you have never heard of Stradbroke Island or ‘Straddie’ as the locals call it, it’s an island located in Moreton Bay 30km south-east of Brisbane in Queensland. As a popular tourist destination, a ferry ride over from Cleveland will have you on the island in about 45 minutes. Straddie’s proximity to Brisbane, makes is a popular weekend getaway place as well as attracting both local Brisbane couples and Gold Coast’ers to the island for their destination wedding.
Getting to and around North Stradbroke Island
Stradbroke Ferries run a ferry service to North Stradbroke Island several times daily. Tickets can be purchased either as Passenger Fares or Vehicle Fares. Tickets are cheaper to travel as a passenger, but you will have to rely on local transport to get around North Stradbroke Island. The North Stradbroke Island Bus Service connects with the Stradbroke Ferries water taxi on the island, dropping off at all the major beaches, tourism destinations and most resorts. Alternatively taking your vehicle across might end up being the more convenient choice even though the vehicle ticket is more expensive. The crossing is under an hour but the onboard cafe has a good range of snacks and beverages. Enjoy the chance to relax, admire the view and fuel up ready to hit the ground to go exploring.

Where to stay on North Stradbroke Island
The main holiday accommodation on North Stradbroke Island are at Point Lookout and Amity Point. There is a variety of accommodation choices – from hotel rooms, apartments, beach houses, luxury holiday accommodation, AirBNB, budget rentals, backpackers and camping grounds. There are also pet-friendly accommodation options.
The weekend I was on North Stradbroke Island I chose to stay at the backpackers at Amity Point. The first night I had a 4 bed dorm room to myself, but after coming back from my wedding, I found I had 2 roommates asleep in the other beds. As a solo traveller, I like staying in some form of communal accommodation for the chance to meet other travellers. I was gone by first light to meet the first ferry back to Brisbane so didn’t even get a chance to say hello to my roomies.

Things to do on North Stradbroke Island
While I was on North Stradbroke Island for work and had little spare time, there are plenty of activities from fishing, diving, surfing, kayaking, sand boarding, whale watching, bushwalking and 4WD tours for the more energetic or otherwise you could just laze about on the beach and go for a dip in the ocean.

Apart from this recent wedding at a beach house in Amity Point & Stradbroke Island Resort I have photographed weddings on Stradbroke Island before, so I am familiar with some of the best locations for wedding photos around Point Lookout on North Stradbroke Island. While I don’t photograph weddings there regularly, I believe that it is a positive, because it means I know the area well enough to take my couples to the good photo spots, but Im super excited to be shoot there each and every time and that keeps me inspired to produce great wedding photos. Just up from the private property where the couple was getting married at Amity Point, was this quiet little beach. Apart from a couple with a dog, I was alone here to soak up the beautiful winter sunshine.

I then wandered along the Gorge Walk at Point Lookout taking in the magnificent view out over the beautiful blue waters.

As I returned from my walk, I came across a mob of kangaroos in the park.
And I couldn’t help snapping this funny wedding advert for Getting Married on Stradbroke Island in the bus shelter.
As the sun was setting over Point Lookout, I headed to the Surf Club to capture the pastel tones in the sky.
The next morning I woke up and headed into Point Lookout and the Blue Room for breakfast to fuel up before starting work. It was tough watching everyone as they were in relaxed weekend mode when I was gearing up to start a 10 hour day photographing a wedding. But on the positive side, my work allows me to travel to beautiful locations!
